Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is the largest Fire and Rescue Service outside London with over 2,500 members of staff and 41 fire stations. They cover an area of approximately 500 square miles and a culturally diverse population of 2.5 million people.
From modern inner city developments to traditional mill towns, Greater Manchester is made up of ten very different districts – Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford and Wigan.
Our vision is to make Greater Manchester a safer place by being a modern, community focused and influential Fire and Rescue Service.
Around 2,400 people work in the Service, this is split between 1,700 operational staff, with the remaining number providing a range of support services including finance, corporate communications, property management, fleet management, human resources and information technology.
The work Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service do is extremely varied and includes everything from fighting fires and rescuing people, to attending road traffic collisions, and promoting fire safety within local schools and to the wider communities within Greater Manchester.

- In 2009, they attended over 55,000 incidents – over 26,000 were fires and over 1,200 were road traffic collisions.
- The fire service aim to reach fires where lives and property are at risk within seven minutes on at least 90% of occasions.
- When people are trapped in a road traffic collision they aim to reach them within eight minutes on 90% of occasions.
- The fire service only cost the average band D council tax payer £46.38 per year.

- It is estimated that the fire service reduce the number of deaths from fire and road traffic collisions by over 128 and reduce property damage by £2 billion each year.
- Through improved training and procedures and community work, they have reduced hoax calls by over a quarter in the last three years.
- The fire service have reduced deliberate fires by over 2,000 per year.
- Over the past three years, they have saved over £20 million whilst maintaining and in the majority of cases improving their attendance times.
- The fire service have looked at how they respond to incidents. Blue lights and sirens are not always needed as driving under blue lights can be dangerous for firefighters and other road users. They have put in place a policy where they’ll go to automatic fire alarms at normal road speed unless the service have information to say there’s a real fire. This has reduced the number of accidents involving fire engines by over 30%.
